Extended Deadlines DO NOT Include W-2s and 1099s

All Katrina affected individual and business taxpayers are allowed to postpone payment of taxes and filing of tax returns until February 28, 2006. This applies to payments and returns due on or after August 29, 2005, except for Florida impacted taxpayers where the date is on or after August 24, 2005. The IRS will also forgive interest and late filing, late payment, or failure to deposit penalties that would otherwise apply, but this may have to be specifically requested by the taxpayer. Regardless of where a taxpayer lives, if they were impacted by Katrina, they may be eligible for tax relief.

The extension to file does not apply to information returns in the W-2, 1098, 1099, 5498 series or to Forms 1042-2 or 8027; however, the IRS will consider waiving penalties for failure to timely file information returns on a case-by-case basis under existing procedures for reasonable cause.

From December 2005
